Hill College Athletic Hall of Fame to induct Class of 2018

The Hill College Hall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce its selections for the Hill College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2018. Jason Alfaro (Baseball), Aneska Arosarena (Volleyball), Tommie Barnes (Men’s Basketball), Brian Herman (Rodeo) and Vilma Tamuleviciute (Women’s Basketball). The Class of 2018 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 19. The Induction Ceremony will be held in the Vara Martin Daniel Performing Arts Center on the Hill College Campus, Hillsboro, and is open to the public, free of charge. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Jason Alfaro (’97) was a member of the first Hill College baseball team to qualify for the Junior College World Series. As a result of his contributions to the team that year, he was selected as an All-Conference, and All-Region player. Jason was drafted by the Houston Astros in 1997 and appeared in seven games for them in 2004. Jason spent 10 years playing professionally in the minor leagues. 

Aneska Arosarena (’97) played for the first Hill College volleyball team to qualify for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. Aneska later went on to a distinguished volleyball career at Purdue University where she set a Big-Ten record in 1998 with 34 kills in a game against Minnesota and matched the total again against Michigan. In 1999, Aneska was named to the Volleyball Academic All Big–Ten Conference team.

The late Tommie Barnes (’84) was the lead scorer and rebounder for Hill College during the 1984 season. That year, he led the Northern Texas Junior College Conference in blocked shots with 27 in league games and 36 overall. Tommie shot 64.2 percent from the field and averaged 20.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. He would finish the 1983-1984 Hill College season in the NTJCC top three in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots. 

Brian Herman (’91) led the first ever Hill College men’s rodeo team to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo, where he competed in both saddle bronc riding and bull riding. After two years at Hill College, Brian competed for McNeese State University before going on to an illustrious professional career as a bull rider in the PRCA and the PBR.

Vilma Tamuleviciute (’01) played for the 2001 Hill College women’s basketball team, which had a record of 29-3. She distinguished herself by averaging 28 points, eight rebounds, four steals and five three-point baskets per game. As a result of her performance on the court, Vilma was named 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team National Junior College Athletic Conference All-American and 1st Team Kodak All-American.

The Hill College Athletic Hall of Fame exists to recognize those individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the achievements and prestige of Hill College in the field of athletics. Men and women are honored either by virtue of their performance on athletic teams representing the College, or by meritorious efforts in years after graduation. Established in 2015, the Hall of Fame seeks to shine a light on those who through hard work, dedication and sacrifice have achieved success on the field, in the classroom and in life.
